Project 2: Watercolor Practice
For this assignment, we were tasked with not just experimenting with watercolor but also the tools we used. In this case I used ear swabs instead of brushes to paint these images. Once again, you can see my subconscious and desire to claw for deeper meanings on display here. I was definitely not intending for at least 2 out of the 3 paintings to resemble jewels while having a final one that could be read as something akin to meteor, or some other mineral. They also share a lot of color palettes because I wanted to make sure I was using all my paint. Here, you can tell I was learning to use thinner layers of water color, and also that I hadn’t worked up the nerve to ask the professor how to effectively and cleanly tear paper.

1: A torn piece of paper that is trisected into 3 “frames” by masking tape. The leftmost piece is a simple watercolor painting of a glowing gem with an emerald. The gem is a shade of pink with its lines of its cut painted with green. The gem is giving off a pink glow and the background is green. The center image is a painting of a gem with a brilliant cut. The background is pink while the gem, and the sparkles around it, are green. The lines of the gem’s cut are done in pink. The right most image is two pink spheres hurdling in some direction. The background is orange and the two spheres have a green trail, similar to a comment, to imply their trajectory.
2: A torn piece of paper that is trisected into 3 “frames” by masking tape. The leftmost piece is an orange growing on a green vine against a pink background. The center image is a stylized sunset, with an orange sun and a sky that is varying shades of pink and orange. The right most image is a dark orange / brown planet being orbited by two moons, one pink and one green.
3: A torn piece of paper that is trisected into 3 “frames” by masking tape. The leftmost piece is a watercolor painting of a pink heart, with two smaller distorted hearts on either side, giving off pink rays of light. The background is green. The center piece is a green face laughing against a pink background. The rightmost piece is a confused pink face with swirly eyes against a green background.
4: A torn piece of paper that is trisected into 3 “frames” by masking tape. The leftmost piece is a watercolor painting of a yellow moon against a blue sky. The center painting depicts a blue mountain rising into the sky. Its peak sits in front of a large yellow sun. The sky is a very light green. The rightmost image depicts what is supposed to be a wave of water against a green sky.
